Can you really do this on a phone conversation?

 01 Making a Phone call

An effective telephone conversation.

Now lets learn how to converse through phone.

Phone conversation has become a part and parcel of our life, we spend
more time talking over phone than in person. There are a list of etiquette
to be followed for an effective phone conversation.
Now lets overhear the  conversation between 2 friends.

This is a typical conversation between 2 friends:

Albert   : Hello.
Bob      : Good Morning. Is Albert there?

Albert   : This is Al.
Bob      : Al, This is Bob. What are you doing?

Albert   : Bob, I'm Sleeping. What time is it?
Bob      :Its 8 AM Time to rise and shine.

Albert   : 8 AM? Aahh! Oh No! I'll be late for work.
Bob      : No, No.. No.. Today is Saturday. You do not have to work today.

Albert   : Aah! Saturday! That's right, No work today! Sounds good!
Bob      : Hey! Are you free today?

Albert   : Ah! Today is Saturday, Yeah I'm free.
Bob      : Would you like to do something together today?

Albert   : That sounds good! What do you want to do?
Bob      : I don't Know. What do you want to do?

Albert   : I don't know Either. why don't you come to my house and we'll think of something.
Bob      : Ok, I'll be there in about an hour.

Albert   : Ok, see you later.
Bob      : See you Al.

Please try to fill the audio gaps in the later part of the conversation, it is left blank for you to practice.

Happy speaking.

Now lets discuss on how to apply this learning into our routine conversation.

The first sentence: Good Morning, Is Albert there?
As we have discussed in the earlier classes, the question word comes at the beginning of the sentence in English (as compared to other Indian languages). Here "Is" is the question word and we can use this in a wide variety of sentences in our day-to-day English conversations.

  1. Is Mr. Ansari there?
  2. Is the manager there?
  3. Is the Service Engineer there?
  4. Is there anyone who speaks English there?
  5. Is mom there?
  6. Is your uncle there?
  7. Is my bike keys there?
  8. Is my book there?
  9. Is my phone charger there?
  10. Is power there?
Now lets move to the 2nd dialogue:

This is Al.

There are various forms of responding to a question about our presence. This is one such response, few other responses are:
  1. Yes, speaking
  2. This is he / him.
  3. I'm Albert
  4. Go ahead or go on.
  5. You are speaking to him.
You can mention if there is any other forms of response in the comments.

3rd conversation: Al, This Bob. What are you doing?

This conversation emphasizes the need to introduce the caller. The importance in addressing the receiver, etc., and more over the initiation of the actual purpose of the call.
